Some key outcomes are that all staff will have an increased awareness of the part that each individual takes to reduce accidents and loss, the organization will have a reduction of corporate insurance premiums for the costs of accidental injuries and loss, and workplace morale will get “back on track”.

Previously employed within the Longshore and shipping industry as Director Health and Safety, responsible for 5000 employees, 77 employers and almost all shipping facilities on the west coast of Canada. This responsibility accommodates four sectors of the shipping community; Containers, Break Bulk, Bulk and Stevedoring with commodities, ranging from sugar and automobiles to logs, containers, sulphur and coal, a wide range of finished wood products and cruise operations.

Through the identification of Industry deficiencies, coupled with the development of effective Safety Management Processes and Strategies for Industry, the result is a 35% decrease of Lost Time injuries and a 44% reduction in the Industry severity index during 2004. This has continued throughout 2005. Overall days lost dropped significantly due to enhanced safety on all job sites with the ongoing development of safe operating standards, an increased awareness through effective and real communication, and the collaborative commitment of both Labour and Management, two sides of the house historically at odds.

Strengths include communications and presentation of opportunities to all parties ensuring successful outcomes both in human tragedy avoidance and cost of loss mitigation. To emphasis and present cultural change, its effect and outcomes, as great opportunities leading to defined objectives successfully met in health and safety. The process commenced with outlined responsibilities of the Board of Directors in Industry Health and Safety, enabling the Port Facilities of British Columbia to attain world leadership in the near future.

Prior to the current posting, was designated Director Health and Safety for the newly formed Northern Health Authority of British Columbia, encompassing an area the size of Germany, and charged with a complete amalgamation of 72 facilities and 7 different principle union organizations representing 7,000 plus personnel, to a common system and like goals and objectives. Within six months introduced a business management system for claim and disability management processes. This initiative, the first of its kind in British Columbia Healthcare, resulted in saving the employee undue hardship and the corporation financial burden. This initiative was adopted as a model to follow throughout many jurisdictions within British Columbia.

In 1998 accepted the position of Director Safety, Health, and Risk Management for the Canadian National Railways US Operations with the principle mandate to align approval through the United States Federal Railroad Administration toward the acquisition of a principle US carrier. Within three years completed the objective without the anticipated hurdles coupled with a claims cost savings measured in the 10’s of millions.

During the period 1994 to 1998, offered and accepted the position of Safety and Aboriginal Affairs for Canadian National Railway in the Province of British Columbia. This posting led to the direct mitigation of past historical disputes and enhancing joint directions for the future for both the Railway and the First Nations communities, particularly in the Pacific Northwest Region, Prince Rupert and Terrace. This resulted in untold savings for both parties and a sustainable future of working together with the day to day responsibilities of each.
